This textbook has been prepared for the Open Elective Course Entrepreneurship Development (OE327COMT) offered to Third Year Engineering students of Savitribai Phule Pune University under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 framework. The course carries 2 credits (Theory: 2 hours/week) and is assessed through Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE): 15 marks and an End-Semester Examination: 35 marks.

Engineering students today are not merely job seekers; increasingly, they are job creators, product builders, and problem solvers who turn technical skills into ventures. This shift is visible across almost every engineering campus in India: final-year project teams now routinely ask not only “does it work?” but “would someone pay for this, and can it be built into a sustainable venture?” This book is written to give an engineering audience a practical, structured, and India-focused introduction to entrepreneurship — from understanding what an entrepreneur does, to generating and validating ideas, designing a business model, and taking a product to market.

The book follows the prescribed syllabus exactly, organized into four units, each of which builds on the one before it so that a student moves logically from concept to execution:

  1. Introduction to Entrepreneurship — the meaning, role, and ecosystem of entrepreneurship. This unit establishes the vocabulary and the “why” of entrepreneurship before any tools are introduced.
  2. Idea Generation & Opportunity Recognition — creativity techniques and evaluating opportunities. Having understood why entrepreneurship matters, the student learns how raw ideas are generated and filtered down to genuine opportunities.
  3. Business Model Development — the Business Model Canvas and market validation. Once an opportunity is chosen, this unit shows how to turn it into a coherent, testable business design.
  4. Marketing Strategies & Customer Acquisition — branding, pricing, digital marketing, and growth. The final unit addresses how a validated business model is actually taken to market, priced, promoted, and grown.

Each chapter contains clear explanations, engineering- and India-relevant examples, worked illustrations, real startup case studies drawn from the syllabus, a chapter summary, key terms, and a graded set of review questions (objective, short-answer, and long-answer) modelled on the CCE and End-Semester pattern. Wherever a concept invites hands-on practice, an Activity box suggests something to try — because entrepreneurship, unlike many engineering subjects, is learned as much by doing (talking to a real customer, sketching a real canvas, pitching to a real audience) as by reading.

The aim is not to make every reader launch a company, but to make every reader think like an entrepreneur — able to spot an opportunity, weigh it honestly against evidence rather than enthusiasm, and communicate it convincingly to teammates, mentors, and investors. Even a student who eventually chooses a conventional engineering career benefits from this mindset: the ability to see a problem as an opportunity, to validate assumptions before committing resources, and to pitch an idea persuasively is valuable inside a large organization as well as inside a startup.
